Pit Cruiser PU

Created on the North Shore, Pit Cruisers are the culmination of 45 years of designing, shaping, and building boards by Carl Schaper. Tested in various contests by Team Riders, Pit Cruisers are well-balanced shortboards that excel in the most demanding of conditions. Available in seven sizes ranging from 5’6″ to 6’5″, a Pit Cruiser is built for shoulder-high to triple-overhead.

Pit Cruiser PU design:

Consider the Pit Cruiser the big brother of the Slot Machine. Added volume and width make it ideal for larger surfers or as Carl likes to say “age-appropriate” riders. High-performance nonetheless, with a little extra volume.

Fins are positioned close to the tails and a squashed tail allows you to ride hard and launch yourself from grunty waves.

About Carl Schaper

With decades of experience in the shaping bay, Carl Schaper belongs to the higher echelon of shaper royalty on Oahu. Knowing a thing or two about high-performance surfing, Carl builds boards for some of the very best surfers out there, including a longboard 2x World Champion pipeline charger, and industry legend Garrett McNamara (Guinness Book of record for the biggest wave ever ridden).

Pit Cruiser PU fin setup:

Only available with FTU fin boxes (compatible with Futures® Fins), Pit Cruisers are pure thrusters and fins are not included.

Who’s the Pit Cruiser for

The Pit Cruiser is best compared to the Slot Machine, Carl Schaper’s other high-performance shape in the NSP line-up. Nearly identical in shape, the Pit Cruiser has a little extra width and added volume, making this the shape that’s better suited for larger riders.

A Pit Cruiser is a high-performance shape built for competition-style riding. A little meatier than the Slot Machine, it is best suited for heavier riders, or those knowing exactly how much volume they want from their shortboard.

The shape features the same pulled nose and tail outline, with the fins positioned close to the tail in combination with a squashed tail, allowing you to ride hard and launch yourself from grunty waves.

PU Construction

Pit Cruiser PU construction diagram

Precision-CNC cut, shaped, laminated and finished by hand. With a natural flex pattern and reliable feel, PU has been the standard construction for many years in the surfing industry.

While not as durable or as light as boards laminated with epoxy resin, PU performs in all surf conditions and can be adapted to suit a wide variety of surfboard models.

– CNC-profiled, hand-shaped high-density polyurethane foam with a wooden stringer
– High-quality polyester resin and fiberglass hand laminated and sanded to a satin-rub or fully polished high-quality finish
– NSP designed FTU fin boxes (compatible with Futures Fins) on all models

Carl talks Slot Machine vs. Pit Cruiser

These have long been the standard for most brands and are the most widely and affordable option still out there. Due to the core’s density, a Pit Cruiser will sit a little lower in the water.

High-performance riders appreciate this feel as it allows you to keep your rail under and gives that slicy or “knifey” ride. CSE, Protech- or Elements boards have an EPS core with different characteristics.

Being a touch heavier also helps PU boards to handle choppy conditions better and are less prone to being bounced around. Sitting lower in the water also has its benefits to barrel riding, providing more hold in hollow waves.

Squashed tail & fins positioned close to the tail

Designed as a pure thruster, a Pit Cruiser comes with 3 FTU fin boxes and is compatible with Futures® Fins. (fins not included)
