Introducing your new Australian Longboard Champion, Luana “Lulu ” Matthies, who just claimed the U18 Junior Women’s crown at the 2025 Thermos Australian Longboard Championships on the Tweed Coast. At just 14 years old, Lulu outsurfed a highly competitive field and placed equal fifth in the Open Women’s division.
The longboard titles were held on NSW North Coast between Kingscliff & Cabarita headland from July 22 to 27 and brought together qualified surfers from all six states. After three days of Masters competition, the Juniors and Open divisions hit the water lighting up the waves on offer. Conditions throughout the week ranged from challenging to ideal, and the level of surfing across the board was strong.

Finals Day at Cabarita delivered the goods. Warm water, sunny skies and clean waves gave competitors the platform to put everything on the line. Lulu stepped up in the Under 18 final with style and control, locking in a 10.93 heat total and finishing more than three points ahead of her nearest rival.
On top of taking out the Junior Women’s U18’s she also surfed into an equal fifth finish in the Open Women’s draw, holding her own against some of the most experienced longboarders in the country competing to represent Australia in ‘The Irukandjis’ Australia’s National Surfing Team.
Throughout the event, Lulu rotated between two of her go-to boards from Laguna Bay Longboards and NSP Shapers Union range. In the early rounds, she relied on her Overdrive to handle unpredictable conditions, linking tight drop knee bottom turns with fast nose rides through tricky sections.
As the swell cleaned up and the waves began to offer longer, more open faces, Lulu switched to the Unicorn—one of Tully St. John’s latest designs, built in NSP’s CSE construction. With its refined rocker, balanced volume, and smooth trim speed, it let her draw clean lines and stay connected through each section.
Confident in her choice and in rhythm with her boards, Lulu put together the kind of performance that leaves no questions unanswered.
