A few days back, the EUROtour hit Santa Pola, with 3 days of competition. The sprints took place on Friday, and on Saturday, almost 200 riders went on a ferry to Tabarca island, just in front of Santa Pola, Alicante.

Noelani doesn’t mention it in her description of the race, but these were 5 hard kilometres with side wind and against the wind, followed by 12km downwind to the mainland, where the spectators could see the contestants gunning for the finish after a 3-buoy chicane.

The conditions were tough and even some of the more accomplished riders were not able to finish the race. Noelani however, did finish and here’s the race from her perspective:

Checking the conditions, super eager to race

“last weekend’s victory at the 5th EuroTour stop in Santa Pola close to Alicante was definitely one of my biggest successes in SUP racing so far. With this win I now moved into 1st position in the overall ranking as well.” (note editor: Full results below)

“This last minute trip to the Costa Blanca in Spain turned out to be a really good decision, which I could already see on the day before the race, when some of the little bumps and a  light breeze looked too inviting for a pre-race session. And the forecast for the next day promised to be even better. So taking the ferry towards Tabarca island early in the morning, I already got excited seeing the conditions with solid ocean bumps and some proper wind.”

“Pumped with adrenaline, the starting sound signalled it was go-time and we turned around the island going for a tough 5k upwind grind. I stuck to my plan of sticking and drafting with the front girls, who turned out to be Susak Molinero and Laura Quetglas.”

“After finally reaching the upwind mark, we turned downwind where I chose a bit of a tougher lane, forcing me to paddle with a crosswind for a while and it actually cost me a couple of hundred meters to the two other girls. Then, turning into the proper downwind part towards the event site, I started to take off. Surfing the bumps was great fun and propelled me into 2nd place with still quite a bit of distance behind Laura in 1st.”

The front pack cornering the island (Video still from SUPracer)

“Just focusing on my own lane, surfing and catching as many bumps as possible was definitely the right thing to do and I managed to get ahead of Laura during that final section of the race. Almost reaching the last buoy before turning towards the shore, a race official yelled at me to go further downwind to another mark and than head back upwind towards this buoy. So being accompanied by Chris Parker from SUPracer, steadily commenting from the media boat, I adjusted my course and gave it my all on the last upwind beat before I finally headed towards the beach.”

My absolute EUROtour highlight so far

“Jumping off my Sonic and running towards the finish line I realized that I was just about to win my first ever EuroTour event – this feeling was amazing and I crossed the finish with a big smile on my face 2:15 minutes ahead of Laura Quetglas, who finished 2nd and 5:27mins ahead of Susak Molinero in 3rd. This result also propelled me into the lead of the EuroTour overall ranking which now hit its half-way point. I’m so stoked…”

Alain attained 2nd place in the Elite Kahuna class; both stoked in this pic

Alain Tuerquetil, father of the NSP racing program also participated in the male elite Kahuna class and came in 2nd. With this event being the one with the second biggest prize purse on the tour, Noelani not only jumped to 1st class in the overall rankings, she also won a cheque for 2500 EUR which didn’t hurt. We like to thank EUROtour for hosting another amazing event, along with the local municipality for their awesome support of our sport.
