First race of the year

2012-05-14 by Mikey Cote

This past weekend marked the beginning of the paddleboarding and SUP racing season in Hawaii. The season is made up of many races varying in lengths that take place all over the hawaiian island chain. The season ends with the Molokai to Oahu championships on the last weekend of July. It is 32 miles long and goes through some of the wildest tropical waters in the world. I have been fortunate enough to compete in the Molokai to Oahu now for 8 straight years. I won the overall stock category in 2008 and 2009 and competed with a good friend last year in the team division where we took the win. This year Im competing in the team division again and look forward to a great race. Last weekend I got third overall in the first race of the season. It was part of the Quiksilver Waterman festival in Waikiki. It was a great time and a great race. The winner was from Australia and he is a very gifted paddler. It was great to see how the competition will look this year and got me pumped up for training and competing. Ill update how the season is moving along and hopefully be able to report a few victories along the way.

Scored an awesome south swell too!!

My First Mother's Day

2012-05-02 by Rachel Spear

One year ago I was lying on my back on bedrest wondering what the future would hold for me. Now I am living my dream..as my children are happy and in perfect health. Evan and Emma were born at 27 weeks, very premature, as a normal pregnancy lasts until about 40 weeks. Both babies had to spend 72 days in the intensive care unit at Kapiolani Hospital for Women and Children before they could come home to be with their family and friends. This Mother's day has been especially rewarding for me to know how far they have come and all the odds they have beat to be here with us today. Mikey and I are wasting no time in showing them all life has to offer. Evan and Emma's favorite activities include playing with dogs and swimming in the ocean. I am looking forward to a life full of fun in the sun with our little ones! Saturday and Sunday Mikey and I enjoyed two glorious three hour surf sessions during the first offical south swell of the summer. Waves were well overhead in the three-four foot range (Hawaiian scale). Winds were light to variable and the water temp was as warm as could be, the sun was shinning!! This is when I am the most happy, soaked with salt water and the sun on my face! Summer feels like it is offically here and I love the carefree light feeling it brings to my heart. This summer is also special because Mikey and I will be getting married!! I cannot think of a better time :) This may turn out to be the best summer of my life. Aloha.....Rachel

Semester is almost done...

Ah! Summer is almost here!

2012-04-26 by Kelly Potts

This semester at UH Maui College has been eventful, and tough at times. (Math always gets me.) I really love my school and how it brings me closer to my community. It's good to see what everyone's perspectives are on life and society, because we can really cover a lot of ground when we put our thoughts and ideas out there. Seeing Mikey's blog about this being a good time (when the waves on the north shore start to settle down) to catch fish, helps me realize the goodness of a simplistic lifestyle. So many of us rally on the daily to make something of ourselves and our time, but hardly take the time to reflect on the simple things that make life great. Nice catch Mikey! Environmental concerns are always a hot topic throughout my courses here on Maui, that and education, which is something I hope you readers can relate with. This is the era of sustainability efforts, decolonization (for those colonized, psychologically and physically), and equality. I think we're moving in the right direction. Ah, yes, it will be good to end the semester on this note, to take some time to reflect on everything I've learned, to surf my heart out, and do something to make a difference in the future. For now -- the BIG PUSH. Two more weeks of studying, and presenting, and I'm free as a bird. A hui ho. ~KellyRead more …
